Headin' out across the town
Goin' down to the supermarket
All the things I want to buy are not on sale
Run into an old friend
She's browsing the cosmetics
And I know it's not my business, but I just can't help it
And all those times in the last six months
We passed without a goddamn word
Seem foolish now, we laugh anyhow..
We each have stories, need to be heard
And I ask, "Well, how are the kids?"
And she says, "Well, how is Liz?"
And we both go, "You don't want to know, you don't want to know"
Make plans for later on
Take the bus into Cooper's Town
Opt to hit the nearest bar, and find neither of us drinks
So it's a root beer for me, and a lemonade for her
It's all good
And the hours slip by as though we were [YOUNG]
And all those times in the last six months
We passed without a goddamn word
Seem foolish now, we laugh anyhow..
We each have stories, need to be heard
And I ask, "Well, how are the kids?"
And she says, "Well, how is Liz?"
And we both go, "You don't want to know, you don't want to know"
And movin' on
We catch a late night movie
Once the curtain comes down, we head back to town
[And at the end of the night]
I said "I wish I'd known just how you were"
"Well I'm only like this now", she says and adds
"So it's just perfect, if rather quite tragic"
[AND TEARS]
'Cause all the time of the last ten years
When we could have had so much more
It's stupid now, impossible anyhow..
And I shout, "Remember the kids!"
And she says, "Well, I hate Liz"
And yeah, she confirms "I always did, I always did"
How does it end?
How does our story end?
Let's just say nothing special
It was a quiet year
